[Travelogue] Short-Escape: Penang, Day 4, Part 3/3 | Lunch at China House Georgetown and Dinner at Miam Miam Gurney Paragon Mall

By Lasmarya Hadi Purwanto - March 20, 2017

And here comes the last part of day 4!
October 28, 2016.
Having the late lunch in an one-of-a-kind all-in-one restaurant/cafe/bakery/galleries/shop in Georgetown area, I don't know which word I should use to define it, as it seems that one label is not enough. It is located from Beach Street to Victoria Street, labeled as the longest cafe in Penang. You can enter the China House from the Beach Street or Lebuh Pantai, walk through the connecting buildings, straight to the end and you'll reach Victoria Street's side of China House. Confused enough? To get the thorough info about the one and only China House, which is not so far away from Peranakan Mansion, head to its superCOOL website, and you'll get an idea of what I mean. http://www.chinahouse.com.my/index-new.html

"ChinaHouse is a traditional compound of 3 heritage buildings, linked by an open air courtyard and converted into 14 spaces comprising shops, cafes, restaurant, galleries, live music and bakery."

We chose a spot in the Library area, and were seated in this cool table, with drawing paper as the tablecloth, and crayons for doodling. Crayons, yes, crayons, where else would they serve crayons on a dining table? Cute, isn't it? :)
(#sorrynotsorry, fangirling all over myself, *narcissistic alert)
(Well, okay, I know, I admit, I don't have an attractive handwriting, I truly acknowledge that it looks like a kiddo's handwriting, but well yeah, if you don't feel like looking at it, then please scroll down :p)

Ah, and the menu in China House, they are as weird as the cafe itself.
You know how I love to try new and weird things?
So we decided to order these two shakes, whose names sound pretty weird and stood out to me the most in the beverages list.
Peanut Butter & Jelly Shake (RM 18.96)
Ever imagined how it would taste to drink peanut butter?
Imagine sticking a straw in a jar of Skippy and take a sip? So weird!
But, guess what, this shake apparently tastes quite good, with that nutty sweet taste, hmm so good!
(Ah, I'm a frantic lover of nuts, and I don't know how they can make nuts this good as a beverage! Yum!)
Another weird choice goes to, Cheese Cake Shake (RM 18.96)
It's literally a milkshake made of the cheese cake of the day, blended and served in a glass.
This one too, weirdly, tastes good. A blend of cheesy and sweet taste, and also thick like a pure milkshake. How can they come up with such a cool idea? To blend a cheese cake? So cool!
Grilled Chicken Breast Laksa Soup (RM 34.91)

Smoked Salmon Bagel (RM 33.02)

Loas Chicken Curry (RM 37.74)
Halloween Fondue Platter (RM 42.45)
The Library Area
(taken from our table)
which connects to the Galleries (pictures below)

and straight to the Courtyard area

(Introducing "The Meowa Lisa")

 (The Canteen)
When we reached the canteen, it's not the business hours yet, and there's not much to see, except that it looks like some kind of bar, with a corner for live music)
China House is a spot worth visiting if you're looking for something unique, a place with a different kind of ambience, lots of instagram-worthy corners, with hipster designs, artistic interior, and after all, where else in Penang that you can find an all-in-one kind of place like this, and they even have two address?? Well, for a first-timer, I am pretty impressed! Though I should be honest, that the place itself amazed me more than the food, expect for the unusual shakes. ssttt

It was almost dusk when we finished our late lunch in China House and we moved on to the Gurney Plaza by Uber to do some shopping and headed to Gurney Paragon Mall's Miam Miam for our (another) late (but this time not so late) dinner. From what I heard, Miam Miam is a fusion restaurant serving French cuisine with some Japanese twist, doesn't it sound tempting already?? It's so uncommon to find any restaurant with these kinds of twists.

From left to right: Iced Matcha Latte with Softee (read: Ice Cream) (RM 18.00),
 Nutella Smoothie (RM 15.00),
 Limette Noir (RM 13.00),
Blue Berries Soda (RM 16.00),
Red Berries Soda (RM 16.00),
 Ice Matcha Latte (RM 15.00)

Lobster Bisque Soup (RM 16.00)

(Riz Miam Miam, RM 26.00)

(Chicken Miso Salad, RM 15.00)

(Salted Egg Pasta, RM 36.00)

(Souffle de Mer, RM 36.00)
With hot rice served inside a souffle, what a twist!
It tasted quite good, if you have ever tasted Bakcang, it tasted almost the same, fragrant rice, a bit of mushroom scent, and aromatic spices, with a souffle on top of it, totally a fusion, blending the oriental and the Western into a scrumptious dish. What a great duo! :d

The specialties of the house:
(Salted Egg Souffle, RM 20.00)

(Valrhona Chocolate Souffle, RM 22.00)
Just by the appearance, these souffles were already so mouth-watering.
And thankfully, they taste just as good, they taste so fluffy, soft, melted in the mouth.
Again, they were gone in several minutes.
Who says you can ever resist dessert?

To put an end to our fattening journey, here's another dessert. :P
 (Twin Cone, RM 12.00)

163C-1-01/02, Gurney Paragon Mall, Pesiaran Gurney, 10250, Penang.
12pm to 9:30pm. Daily.
604- 226 7818

And that's the end of our day 4.
One last look of Penang's one and only Komtar, before our afternoon flight back to Medan the next day.

Penang might not be known for its touristy spots, as it is more known for its hospitals, but through these posts, we're trying to show you that there're a lot of other things that you can explore in Penang, there're lots of good food to try, either local or international food, there are also some good spots for your instagram feed. So, I guess if you have a good itinerary, you know what to do in Penang, then I think, as a tourist, Penang could be a good choice too? Well, let me know what you think. :)

fin.

Anyway, hope that I can bring you another good story to share anytime soon.
So, see you in the near future? :D

xoxo
