[Travelogue] South Korea: Busan, Day 4 | Gamcheon Culture Village, Avant Garde, Lotte Gwangbok Mall, Jagalchi Market and BIFF Square

By Lasmarya Hadi Purwanto - June 24, 2017

25th March 2017
We set off quite late, at around 11 p.m. and happened to get a taxi driver, a 40-50 something man, who's really outgoing, that when we told him we're heading to Gamcheon Culture Village, he kept recommending us some good spots to take pictures, like how to get there and so on in Korean, although he knew that we didn't really speak Korean and he's not good in English either, but well, I guess, I'm just glad we met someone with such great hospitality despite the language barrier. :)
Ahh, and he also had a really "outgoing" way of driving, you should check our crazy taxi ride up to Gamcheon (since it is located on the mountainside, so UP we go) in the video at the end of the post!

Gamcheon Culture Village is dubbed as "Korea's Santorini" for its brightly painted houses, artistic murals (definitely suitable for selfies) and statues which are created by the residents, and beautifully decorated alleys that successfully attract tourists.

"This historically rich, mountainside slum became a famous tourist destination after getting an arty makeover in 2009 when students decided to brighten up the neighbourhood with clever touches up the stairs, down the lanes and around the corners. Today it's a colourful, quirky community of Lego-shaped homes, cafes and galleries, ideal for an hour or two of strolling and selfies."- lonelyplanet

Is there anything that you notice from the three pictures above?

Well, yes, there are actually three statues standing  in front of the houses, which are painted to look like it merged with the view.
This is what I mean ↓ Super cool, isn't it?

I really enjoyed my time in Gamcheon, with all the psychedelic colours all over the places, the creative art pieces, I really think it's a genius idea to revamp this village, in such a way that it became  soooo pretty <3 like literally, and again, here too, they managed to keep the area clean, inspite of all the tourists. So, what's not to love? I'm definitely sold!
Ah, enough with the words, I'll let the photos do the story-telling for you. Please do enjoy! :)

Hotteok (KRW 1,200)

Even the alleys are "instagram-worthy"!
Major love!

Lured by this tempting jelly...

(Jelly with Mango and Strawberry Sauce, KRW 3,000)
Okay, so this is just a usual jelly, it only looked different, so if you're looking to try something unusual, or maybe Korea's specialties, skip this one, I don't really recommend you to try, because it's just well, jelly, nothing much.

Do you spot the long queue for the Little Prince statue?
The Little Prince is definitely popular!

We ended our Gamcheon tour by visiting this famous "Cafe Avant Garde" right next to the street with the three statues. which is said to be "a must visit" if you are in the Gamcheon area, because it has a killer view from its balcony, and the place itself is soooo cozy, you'll wanna stay longer.

Sorry, is it too obvious that I liked my coffee paper cup a bit too much? XD
The cup holder is just too cute to be ignored, by me, of course. >,<

There I go again, with the coffee cups, wkwk
Each one of us got different cup holder, and they're just too cute, omg, I can't stop taking pictures of them.

Okay, okay, I'll sober up.
Photos of human beings will be right up!

To go back to the city centre, we waited at the taxi stand in front of this gate below, there were a lot of taxis, and a lot of tourists, but we still needed to queue a bit before we got our taxi, and hopped on, heading to Lotte Gwangbok Mall. (fare : KRW 4,000)

First stop in Lotte Mall: Line's Store!
Omg, they're all uber CUTEEEEE, >o<
I wanna buy them all, if only they are not that expensive :(

Leaving the Lotte Gwangbok Mall + Aqua Mall, we took the subway from Nampo to...

Jagalchi Market(stop at Jagalchi Station)

They sell huge range of living and high quality seafood in the market, and there are restaurants available too for those opting to have a taste of the seafood fresh from the water.

No, we're not buying any seafood, and we're not dining there either, we just went to check out the market and marveled at the huge-size of the living sea creatures. Haha, what an activity to do :P

By walking across the street from the Market, we went straight to Busan International Film Festival Square (or usually called as BIFF Square), which is almost like the combination of
Hongdae or Myeongdong and the Hollywood's Walk of Fame. It is a complex area, featuring Busan's first run theaters, recently added shops and leisure activities, also famous movie
 celebrities' hand-printed stone slabs.

Got into the Artbox in the BIFF area,
omg, how could there be so many cute things in one day???

 Caramelized Strawberry, KRW 3,000

 Churros, KRW 2,000

Before we ended the day, we made a stop at Busan Station to claim our KTX ticket to Seoul for the next morning...

and walked across the street, heading back to our Airbnb. Have I mentioned that our airbnb's apartment building is located near Chinatown? And here's the night view, wondering where were all the people? Or maybe we just came back too late?

If you noticed, we didn't really have proper lunch and dinner, so we decided to buy some take-away dinner before going back, and with no wonder, we all had the same mind, NENE CHICKEN please! That Nene Chicken in Jeju has absolutely put us under its spell, that we kept looking for it, no matter where we were :d.
But sadly, there's no Nene around the area, but we found Kyochon!
Boneless Chicken with Rice Batter (Salsal Chicken Strips), KRW 16,000
Unfortunately, it didn't taste as mind-blowing as Nene in Jeju, it just tasted so so, even the texture is nothing much, we're disappointed,  but I heard that Kyochon usually tastes so good, so crispy, and tastes even better with the sauce. Is it true? Is it because we took away? Or maybe we picked the wrong one?

So, to sum up, dinner of the day: Kyochon, two cups of ramen, and fried eggs by Stella. :d
Just pretend you don't see the Soju, will you? XD
