[Travelogue] Melbourne : Day 1 (2/3) The Kettle Black - Best Ricotta Hotcake? | sillyandordinarygirl

By Lasmarya Hadi Purwanto - February 10, 2019

Hello, there!
How's your Chinese New Year so far? I hope it's been going great, and you'll have collected enough red-pockets for a year! :P You know how they("we", to be precise) call it, it's a "once-in-a-year" income that is not to be missed. $.$
Well, anyway, Happy Chinese New Year or Spring Festival to any of you who celebrate it, wishing you a great year ahead filled with abundant luck, chances, prosperity, health, better life, or anything else that you wish for.

Without further ado, here's the remaining travelogue for the first day we spent in Melbourne.
After checking in at the Larwill Studio in Parkville, we headed out to have our late lunch at the Kettle Black in South Melbourne. We walked to the tram stop right in front of the hotel, the Royal Childrens Hospital/Flemington Rd stop, and with the Myki card that we purchased earlier, we got on the tram and rode the tram number 58 (West Coburg to Toorak) for 19 stops (around 25 min) to 119-Wells St/Park St (South Melbourne) then walked for another 5 minutes to the Kettle Black.

The Kettle Black is a chic cafe with a very well-designed interior, white theme adorned with some golden and wooden furniture, giving a luxurious feel to it but somehow also cozy enough, oh and very "instagram-able" as well. The Kettle Black is pretty hidden as there's no big sign or board written "KETTLE BLACK", well, they do have a two letter "KB" as you can see from their website, but if you still can't find it, look for a white terrace house (with some tables outside), which is right next to a modern looking building with floor-to-ceiling glass windows. I would really love to show you how it looks from the outside, but silly me, I forgot to take pictures of it :(
Well, if you still don't get what I mean, let me show you:

The Kettle Black is famously known for its "possibly-the-best" ricotta hotcake in the world, therefore, when we got there, it's what we asked for.
It was listed as HOTCAKE WITH RICOTTA, BLUEBERRIES, MAPLE, DOUBLE CREAM, SEEDS & NUTS - $22.00 - in the menu.

Well, to a person who just had a ricotta hotcake for the first time in her life that day, it sure did taste really good. The hotcake, covered by seeds, nuts and every other things, had a very nice texture to it, it was soft, slightly moist thanks to the maple syrup, and to my liking, not overly sweet too. On top of it, if you have been reading my blog for a while now, you'll know how I can go NUTS over NUTS, so the generous amount of nuts and seeds on the cake added another point to it; and accompanied by the freshness of strawberries? I can see why they said it is "possibly-the-best" one globally.

The next one in the menu that we ordered was the CHILLI SCRAMBLED EGGS WITH MOOLOOLABA CRAB, CRAYFISH OIL & SEA SPRAY - $20.00 -
As to balance out the sweetness of the ricotta hotcake, we opted for a more savory dish but to be honest, when we're looking at the menu, the Chilli Scrambled Eggs seemed the safest for Asian tongues like ours. You can check their menu here.

The scrambled eggs, served on a slice of toast, was adequately creamy, seasoned well with the chilli flakes, which suited our palate, and the crab meat added some sea freshness to it. So it tasted pretty nice as well.

Have you met my dear friend, Ms. Diana Liu? Look how effortlessly gorgeous she looked! <3
Taken by yours truly, me. :P

And down here, was me, trying to replicate her photogenic looks, but well...
I guess I should be thinking of how to pose well...
instead of..
thinking which one to eat first...x.x

The Kettle Black's high-end yet minimalist interior builds up a very nice ambiance in it, which makes it a quite good place to have your breakfast/brunch/lunch/or even late lunch like ours. From the information in the internet, it was said that there might be some queuing as the Kettle Black was pretty popular. But, fortunately, when we got there, at around 2.30/3.00 p.m., we didn't queue at all! It was probably because it had passed lunch time, and it was almost their closing hour, but the meals were served fast, and we still had plenty of time to finish them. So I guess the queuing and the crowd depends on the time as well. But even with the queuing, I still think it was worth the time waiting a bit to have a pleasant experience either breakfasting/lunching at the Kettle Black :)
