[Travelogue] South Korea: Jeju, Day 2 :) | Seosan, Abalone, Sunrise Peak, Canola Field and Jeju Dongmun Market

By Lasmarya Hadi Purwanto - May 02, 2017

23rd March 2017
We set out at 11 something, almost lunch time, (*yas, I know, we were quite late than the usual tourists, who had a packed schedule, and began the day early in the morning, we're not late, we just took our time well. XD *excuses detected We seriously made good use of our time: waking up after the sunrise, having breakfast without any rush, taking turns having bath, putting on some make up, doing something to our hair, mixmatching to get the "outfit-of-the-day" kinda look, discussing where to go, hmm, we surely used up our morning WELL. :DD
Another major point that I enjoyed the most from the trip: no rush, no tight schedule, we got to travel at our own pace, what's more WONDERFUL that that? *special thanks to Ms. Stella Jocelyn, who had been an awesome guide for the whole trip, who happened to manage everything so well, that we enjoyed the trip so much (no, no, this is not the last post of the South Korea series yet, this is only day 2 guys, more to come! :))

The second day itinerary was set for us to see the nature, and so we first headed to Jeju City Bus Terminal, rode the 710 bus, got down at Seongsan bus station, (fare 3300 won) then walked a bit to have some lunch first at the Seongsan area before going up the Sunrise Peak.

Btw, here's an English bus map for Jeju's tourist spot, and as you can see, we rode the grey color 710 bus, which ended at Seongsan Port Entrance. In other words, to reach the Sunrise Peak or Seongsan Ilchulbong, we'll need to pass by a lot of bus stops and get down at almost the end of the route (as for us, we got down at the second last stop, Seongsan and walked to the Sunrise Peak.)

There are a great deal of eatery choices in the Seongsan neighborhood, from the restaurants serving local specialties, like fresh seafood ramen, kimchi fried rice, black pork etc to nationwide chain cafe like Angel in Us, Paik's coffee till Starbucks. This kind of livelihood successfully makes the vicinity a tourist-friendly and tourist-crowded area, which is quite the opposite as compared to the slower-pace city center.
Another cute thing is, you can see a lot of banners showing that the restaurants have been visited by celebrities either for shooting purpose or for personal visit. You'll get to see a lot of Kang Ho Dong, 1N2D crews, and any other variety shows' casts being pictured with the owner and their signatures in front of the restaurants.  Well, that's also how we decided where to eat, by looking at which place got the most pictures of celebrities and most signatures wkwkwk don't blame us, we're hard-core K-pop fans, remember?
Well, just kidding, apart from that, while in Jeju, we thought that we should really have a taste of what Jeju is most famous for, its fresh abalones, and so here we were, ordering the spicy noodle seafood soup (45,000 for small portion), and abalone porridge 15,000 won) :dd

(Meeting my idol be like......kyaaa >o<)

(Here's a service for my dear readers... haha)↓

Side dishes ↑
(I have always been amazed by Korean's hospitality, they tend to give a generous amount of side dishes, not only the huge variety but also the portion is enough to make us full just by looking haha)

Abalone Porridge ↑
Definitely tastier than the usual porridge :)
Spicy Noodle Seafood Soup
cooked in front of us, with FRESH seafood, and the still moving abalonessss uwooo
(check the video at the end of the post for the moving stills of the abalones and the boiling spicy soup
*gulp gulp)
These are the best meals to have in Jeju while you are fighting with the cool wind and the chilly weather, the hot boiling soup and the warm abalone surely heated up our tummy and filled us with some energy to do the hiking. :)

The view from our seats in the restaurant⇑
a peek of the Sunrise Peak!
(hihi, loving how it rhymes <3)

The restaurant
(do you see the small pictures sticking on the glass? Those are the pictures of Choo Seung Hoon, the daddy of Choo Sa Rang with the owner!)

The Almighty Sunrise Peak 성산일출봉

"Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak rose from under the sea in a volcanic eruption over 100,000 years ago. Located on the eastern end of Jejudo Island, there is a huge crater at the top of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. The crater is about 600m in diameter and 90m high. With the 99 sharp rocks surrounding the crater, it looks like a gigantic crown. While the southeast and north sides are cliffs, the northwest side is a verdant grassy hill that is connected to the Seongsan Village." - visitkorea

Admission fee: 2,000 KRW

One of the things that I really like about Korean is that they obviously love their country, and that they take a really good care of their nature. We could barely see any trash along the trail (it's definitely not a short trail! as far as we can see, none!) or even on the grassland, and the paved footpath for the ascending and descending trail, they certainly ensure the comfort of tourists visiting the spot. Well, with this kind of hospitality welcoming us (yes, I consider a "well-groomed" tourist destination spot to be a kind of hospitality by the locals too, since they take care of it so well, that I assume this is how they show their pride of their nature)  mixed with this beautiful deep blue sea stretching in front of us, what not to love?

Another pride of Jeju is its Haenyeo or Woman Diver. Most of them are elderly women above 50 years old, and they are still actively working/diving looking for fresh abalones, conch and other seafood daily without sophisticated diving equipment. They represent the image of strong woman and mother in Jeju. Wow, their hardworking spirit is truly admirable. Imagine how hard it is for them, to dive into the cold water under the chilly weather? I can't even imagine putting a foot in, it must be freezing! Brrrr

This picture below is what the Sunrise Peak looks like from above.

And so, we descended from the Peak, then walked around the Seongsan area looking for some ❀❀❀ Hihi. Actually, when we're on the bus passing the roads to Seongsan, we saw a yellow canola flower field on one side of the street, which if I'm not mistaken, was around the Goseong-ri bus stop, and we're almost tempted to get off, almost, but we cancelled anyway, since Stella reminded us that if we got down there, then we'd need to walk further to Seongsan and the Sunrise Peak. It would be better for us to go back there after. So, here we were, walking back passing a couple of bus stops, and  some cute-looking cafes and restaurants on the way (shown in the pictures below), while in search of the yellowish land of flowers by the sea. ❀❀❀

Oh, how I love the serenity of Jeju. <3

There it is! Spotted one!

This is a canola flower field owned by a couple of (I guess) farmers, who opens their field for photo shooting business :D. Admission fee @1,000 KRW. The owners are very friendly and offered to take pictures of four of us, and even gave us tips on the best spot and how to take good pictures with the flowers. Haha

Our photos, credit to the field owner, with the poses conducted by him and taken with Fiona's camera :) He surely has a lot of experience taking pictures of a group like us, since it came out pretty nicely. XD

Having so much fun playing in the flower field, we walked again to a bus stop nearby, were given direction by the field owner, waited for bus 710 to head back to the Intercity Bus Terminal in the city center (fare 3,300 KRW), then from there, we continued walking a bit to Hankook Hospital bus stop, rode bus 100, got down at Jeju's Dongmun Market (fare 1,150 KRW) looking for some dinner to fill our hungry tummy. ;d
Please be noted, that Dongmun Market closes at 8 p.m. so it is highly advisable to visit the market before evening, so that you can have more time to explore. There are a lot of street food stalls inside, and souvenirs to see and buy.

Walnut Cake, 3,000 KRW with whole walnut inside :d

Eihh! RUNNING MAAAN!
If Running Man's members ate here, then we should too!

Ending the day with a stop at Daiso, which is located just right next to the gate 2/3 of the Dongmun Market before going back to Yeha guesthouse by bus, and came across these cuties *.* can't stop myself from taking pictures of them haha
